What is the Pathway?
Everyone on this Pathway is able to learn and reflect on what grief is and how we can sit with people and support them at a very vulnerable time of their lives. It will encourage us to think about ourselves and what we personally bring to this ministry.
There are two routes on this Pathway
- Bereavement visiting creates space to explore the differences that grief brings in how we support people and how we might develop personal support for an emotional role.
- Taking funerals has specific sessions around planning and leading a funeral with the family & friends of the person who has died. (In order to take funerals there are further permissions needed, ask for details)
We know that people can minister and support others from a place of grief but we do not recommend this Pathway to those who are recently bereaved or processing grief because the content of the courses and sessions are unlikely to be helpful. We also know that grief rarely ends and there will be support in place if you are personally affected by the content.
Please note that all required training for Pathways participants are also open to anyone as individual session for those interested in a specific topic.
What is involved?
Completing the Pathway includes:
- The learning, training and formation below.
- Practical experience organised by the participant and their incumbent – opportunities to explore and grow in this ministry.
It takes a minimum of one year to complete, but you can join at any point in the year and take longer if you would like. Sessions are spread across the year to give you time to reflect and embed the skills and learning you take away from them.

More information…
Each of the learning courses and training events are open to anyone to book. You might book as a taster, invite a team or want to refresh your ministry. You can find them all on the Equip hub.
To join this Pathway your vicar (or Churchwarden if you are in vacancy) will need to email Pathways@Coventry.Anglican.org with a short recommendation. At this point we will register you onto the Pathway and send you details for the formation group.
