This is the language of the Gospels and the Paul’s letters…. so reading it is a bit like ‘returning to a familiar home’ for church people – but it also provides a chance to research and ‘dig deeper’ into the background and meaning of the New Testament – helpful for thoughtful Christians as well as preachers and teachers.
A beginners course
Roderick Clark, Reader at Lillington, is offering to run a beginners’ course, probably starting this Autumn [2025] and lasting up to two years – with weekly sessions mainly in school term-times. The emphasis will be on language, although Biblical interpretation may arise from time to time. This course would not count towards any diocesan qualifications for licensed ministry.
The priority is to arrange the course to best suit those who are interested – whether online or face-to-face in Lillington, Leamington Spa. Sessions could run for 90 minutes or two hours – on a weekday evening or during the day, depending on those who are interested.
Costs
There will be no course fee – but participants will need a copy of Jeremy Duff’s The Elements of New Testament Greek, 2005 edition [currently £28 on Amazon]. If we meet face-to-face, then there will also be your travel costs.
Just a gentle word of warning…
It would be kind to mention now that, if Latin at school terrified / disgusted you – or modern languages prove a complete mystery to you – then NT Greek might just be too great a linguistic challenge. On the other hand, please note that the purpose of the course is to read the language – not converse in it nor translate from English.
