| Dear , |
Winter is a time to wait.
I’m writing this on a cold clear day, the kind when the sky is blue, you can see for miles, but you know if you want to go outside you’ll need a warm coat. It’s weather I’d love to be walking in. Being on a hillside or by a river on a day like this is one of my favourite ways of spending time – as long as I know I’ll find warmth and a hot meal at the end! Keeping your spirits up when it’s cold, dark and you’re lost is a lot harder.
As Christians we’re called to hope. Jesus came with news that was Good, that life is breaking through, that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Maintaining hope is sometimes hard though, especially when circumstances are difficult and the way forwards is unclear.
There are a lot of bare branches outside. As far as nature is concerned, it’s a season for waiting, not growth. For me, this is a reminder to have hope when the circumstances show no sign of changing. The leaves and fruit will come. In the same way, God is at work. I might not know what its leaves and fruit will look like yet, or when they will arrive, but the kingdom of God is close at hand.
