What is the Pathway?
Please note that 2025-2026 this Pathway will be running it’s sessions midweek during the day (with some Saturdays) in Coventry.
People who have pastoral hearts often take a lot on themselves as they sit with and support people who are hurt, upset or in crisis. This Pathway helps us to consider how we can care for and show love to the people we minister to. But it also encourages us to reflect on ourselves, what we bring to pastoral situations and where we need to have boundaries and self-care so we can look after ourselves and those around us.
The Pastoral ministry Pathway is aimed at any lay minister involved in pastoral ministry. This might be a formal ministry such as being a pastoral visitor or being involved in a group that’s committed to the care and nurturing of people. Or it may be an informal ministry as you have a gift of spotting people in need of care or perhaps you’ve noticed people come to you with their problems. You might have been involved in this ministry for a long time or be exploring it for the first time.
Please note that all required training for Pathways participants are also open to anyone as individual session for those interested in a specific topic.
What is involved?
Completing the Pathway includes:
- The learning, training and formation below.
- Practical experience organised by the participant and their incumbent – opportunities to explore and grow in this ministry.
It takes a minimum of one year to complete, but you can join at any point in the year and take longer if you would like. Sessions are spread across the year to give you time to reflect and embed the skills and learning you take away from them.

More information…
Each of the learning courses and training events are open to anyone to book. You might book as a taster, invite a team or want to refresh your ministry. You can find them all on the Equip hub.
To join this Pathway your vicar (or Churchwarden if you are in vacancy) will need to email Pathways@Coventry.Anglican.org with a short recommendation. At this point we will register you onto the Pathway and send you details for the formation group.
